{Bridesmaids} Please Don’t Wear it Again…

I’ve been super-duper lucky when it comes to the bridesmaid gig. I’ve done it twice, both times as a MOH and I wore the same dress. I was the only person standing up for the bride in each wedding and I totally got to pick my own. Score. Though I chose the dress, I don’t think I’ve worn it for any other occasion. I don’t even know if I still have it.

And perhaps it’s not the dress itself that women can’t/won’t wear again. Maybe there’s more of a psychology to a bridesmaid dress than it simply being inappropriate for another occasion (or just plain hideous). Hm. I wonder if there’s any validity to that thought? Is there some sort of mental thing that happens to us when it comes to the bridesmaid gown? I wonder.

At any rate, I saw a few dresses this week that I thought were super pretty and might, just MIGHT be wearable again….assuming we don’t have a mental block to do so.

I very much want this dress right now. Via Etsy seller Idea2Lifestyle.

OK…..stop right here. I totally tried to find some dresses that I thought were doable and I just kept running into more and more pictures of dresses that I wouldn’t wear versus ones that I would. So, I’m going to post the Bridesmaid dress Don’ts instead. Much funnier for a Friday, yes?

Really? Come on folks.

I don’t care if it’s in Hawaii. Friends don’t do this to friends.

I see where this was trying to go, but it was a fail. The dresses look like they belong on Granny’s sofa.

It’s BRIDESmaid, not FRENCH maid.

Expensive ≠ Tasteful

Contrary to popular opinion, I think there is such a thing as too many ruffles. This picture proves that.

Horizontal stripes? Now that’s just mean.

1983 called and it wants its sleeves back.

I mean the bride could have tried, TRIED to choose a dress that was figure-friendly for them all.

From left to right: Laura Ingalls, Mary Ingalls, Carrie Ingalls, Grace Ingalls, The Bride, Nellie Oleson……

OK. I do believe that’s enough snarky for one day.

Happy Friday, y’all!

Bridesmaids, A Review.

So I made The Candyman take me to see Bridesmaids this weekend. I mean seriously, how can I write a sometimes-wedding blog and not go to this movie? The answer is, I cannot.

What I can do is tell you how hard I laughed. I haven’t laughed this hard in a theater since this scene from Juno (I could only find a sound bite file). Click here to hear it.

For some reason, that spit and sticks line really gets me going. Still. And generally, when I lose it, The Candyman is not far behind me. Sometimes we’re the only people cracking ourselves up in the theater. Yes, we’re that couple.

So back to the movie review on deck. Bridesmaids was hysterical. Because I am NOT an official movie reviewer (my favorite movies are Grease, Dangerous Liaisons and Stranger Than Fiction), I am concerned about spoiling the best of this movie, so I’m going to be brief.

Melissa McCarthy as Megan, the groom’s gruff and rough sister, stole the show. The food poisoning scene in the Kleinfeld’s-esque salon was one I wasn’t sure I could make it through. It’s all pants-pooping and vomiting hijinks that was incredibly disgusting, yet I could not “Look away! Look away!” (Those of you who have seen the movie will get this.) This actress makes me happy.

Now, if you’re thirty-something, single and wanting to get married, you may not want to watch this movie. I got a little sad for the main character Annie, played by Kristen Wiig. Honestly, some of the scenes hit a little too close to home for me. The scene where the BFF Lillian, played by Maya Rudolph is making her exit from the wedding and stops and stares at Annie and then jumps into the car and on to her new life? Oh. I just felt that pain, that heart wrenching “I’m OK. I’m good enough even though I feel like I’ll never ever ever meet anyone in the world who will love me enough to marry me” feeling. I mean, my throat got all closed up and choke-y feeling and the tears were welling up in my eyes and then Megan walks up to her with another of her one-liners and it sent me into that laughing-but-I’m-crying thing and I just couldn’t stop. Brilliance.

Helen, played by Rose Byrne is the bitchy friend you just can’t seem to top. She’s that chick, you know the one, the one you love to hate because she’s Little Miss Perfect. She’s got more money, is prettier, and knows everyone and has everything and you just want to kill her. I think we’ve all had one of those kinds of people in our lives at some point in time.

Now Rita, played by Wendi McLendon-Covey (best known for her work in Reno 911) is the mom in the group. The mom with three boys who has had it with motherhood. Her delivery of the disgustingness of little boys is incredibly vivid and leaves nothing to the imagination. She takes starry-eyed newlywed Becca (Ellie Kemper) under her wing and gets real with her on the plane to Vegas, ordering her a double Seven and Seven, dismissing her concern with a “You’ll like it, it’s sweet!” comment.

I love her because she’s foul-mouthed and cares not.

So that’s all I’m going to give away because I don’t want to ruin it. If you hate the movies Dumb and Dumber, or The Hangover or Old School or similarly ridiculous movies that include poop and vomit and sex (sometimes all at the same time) – you need to skip this one. If Talladega Nights and Zoolander make you laugh, hit up the theater pronto. Make sure you get yourself some Twizzlers and a half Cherry/half Coke slushy too – they are my movie go-to refreshments.

Have you seen it? Did you love it too?Check out the trailer if you haven't seen it. It still cracks me up.

Big Red

OK, so I gotta go out of town on Thursday. Where am I going? I'm heading to my illustrious alma mater, Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana. Ah, Indiana in the Spring! Campus is so pretty this time of year! I do love going back and visiting. The Candyman says I'm too nostalgic. He's probably right! But none the less, I get to see old professors and hopefully see some old classmates-turned-professors as well! Oh yeah, I'm going because I have a guest lecturer gig. Fun! I've been trying to make it so I can do this every year. I'm not afraid of public speaking (go figure) and so talking to a lecture hall full of young adults is fun for me. I try to make it fun/ny and interesting. Last year was the first time I ever saw a student sleep in my class. I thought I was going to be like one of those totally lame profs and wake the dude up, but I maintained control. I was so offended! But here's the thing, this week at Indiana University is Little Five Week. As in Little 500. As in the world's greatest college weekend in all of history! Seriously. It's like the Super-Bowl of Bloomington. Everyone comes to town and it's just a big fat party all over the place. The school had to ask MTV to stop coming to film that weekend because the town (and surrounding towns) would simply over-flow.  Anyway, the whole week before the party weekend is when the REAL parties happen on campus. Way way WAY fun. If you've got a class with mandatory attendance, you save up all your sick days for Little 500 week. You work out a rotation schedule with your buddies in the same classes to make sure someone gets the notes. It's serious. So, since the race is this weekend, I'm thinking attendance may be a little light. No matter, it will still be fun.

However, in honor of my "Big Red"  alma mater, I'm featuring the following bridesmaids gown from the Spring 2011 line of Melissa Sweet. I love it when designers do all the gowns in the same color-way. Super-dramatic and this line is flawless! G'head. You can drool a little.

Red hot, right? Love the long one. I want one in navy, no charcoal gray!

I'm sure that y'all in the wedding blog-o-sphere know that last week was the week for fashion. Everyone showed their new bridal stuff for Sping 2011. Some of it was fabulous, some just kind of blah. Since I'll be en route Bloomington/Nashville most of Thursday and Friday, I'm giving you a chance to pick which designer's line you'd like to see featured.

So go down there and pick your favorite. What? Your favorite is missing from this list? Pray tell then, who am I missing? So go. Go on. Choose.
